Summary Street®
|
|
Summary Street is a Web-based reading comprehension and writing
instruction tool. Students use their own words to write summaries of
short online texts, such as social studies or science chapters or any
supplementary text. Summary Street automatically compares the student's
writing to each of the sections of the text and provides immediate
feedback about the content coverage on a section-by-section basis.
Online feedback includes information on copying from the text, spelling,
redundancy, and irrelevant sentences.
Feedback can be tied directly to any piece(s) of content that should be
covered in the summary.
Summary Street has been shown to be both an effective and enjoyable
educational tool with lasting results. Students spend more time
practicing as they strive to improve their summaries within the engaging
environment. Results from classroom studies have shown that students
write significantly better summaries, spend much more time writing, and
develop reading skills that transfer to standardized tests more than
students who write summaries but receive no automated feedback. Also,
Summary Street boosts the performance of students so they can tackle
more difficult reading assignments.
Developed in conjunction with the Colorado Literacy Tutor Project and
funded through the U.S. Institute of Education Sciences and National
Science Foundation, Summary Street is currently used in schools
throughout Colorado and other states. Summary Street technology is
based on the industry leading
KAT™ engine.
