Pearson Knowledge Technologies' Summary Street is Finalist in Software & Information Industry Association's 2006 Codie Awards
Recognized in "Best Instructional Solution: Language Arts/English - Secondary" Category
BOULDER, Colo. - Feb. 8, 2006 - Pearson Knowledge
Technologies (PKT) announced today that Summary Street®, a
Web-based reading comprehension and writing instruction tool, is a
finalist in the Software & Information Industry Association's
(SIIA) 21st Annual Codie Awards. Summary Street, whose technology is
part of the basis of PKT's new WriteToLearn™ product, is
honored in the "Best Instructional Solution: Language Arts/English -
Secondary" category.
This year, Codie Awards judges selected finalists from a record 1,026
nominations from more than 500 companies. Established in 1986, the Codie
Awards recognize outstanding achievement and vision in the software,
digital content and education technology industries. The Codie Awards
are renowned as the "Oscars of the software industry."
"The Best Instructional Solution: Language Arts/English -
Secondary" category awards the best school-based education
technology solution for Language Arts/English curriculum or content
for students in grades 6-12.
Summary Street is a Web-based reading comprehension and writing
instruction tool. Students use their own words to write summaries of
short online texts, such as social studies or science chapters or any
supplementary text. Summary Street automatically compares the student's
writing to each of the sections of the text and provides immediate
feedback about the content coverage on a section-by-section basis.
Online feedback includes information on coherence, spelling,
redundancy and irrelevant sentences. Feedback can be tied directly
to any pieces of content that should be covered in the summary.
"Reading comprehension is key to learning a subject. Writing
summaries of learning materials is a proven way of increasing
student mastery of content and written expression," said Lynn
Streeter, president, PKT. "This product makes it possible for
teachers to give students practice in these important skills. It is
exciting to have Summary Street recognized by the Codie Awards."
PKT co-developed Summary Street with the Institute of Cognitive
Science at the University of Colorado. The product has been shown to
significantly increase reading comprehension and writing skills as
measured on Colorado achievement tests.
"The 21st Annual Codie Awards continue the tradition of honoring
the best of the software, information and education technology
industries," said Ken Wasch, president, SIIA. "When one
considers the number of outstanding companies that competed this
year, being named a Codie Awards Finalist is a significant
achievement."
The Codie Awards is the only peer-recognition awards program of its
kind in the industry, providing a unique opportunity for companies to
earn the praise of their competitors. The 2006 Codie Awards will be
presented at a gala event on May 16, 2006, at the Westin St. Francis
Hotel in San Francisco, Calif.
